On a cold day in December 2003 I was walking around downtown Cadillac Mi. wondering what I was going to do with the rest of my life. I had retired from the Cadillac Police Department and then spent several years caring for my elderly father.
I had always wanted to have my own shop, an antiques shop. That had been the dream of my friend Joy Buchanan and myself. Sadly Joy became ill with breast cancer and passed on. I miss her horribly to this day! I tried the antique shop but could not do it alone. It had been “our” dream. So what could I do? I loved Fairies. And so it began, I would sell fairies, dragons and wizards! My dear daughter, Joy Bohannon ( I know its confusing), Said “Mom you have to sell stones and books and tarot cards too!” To be honest with all of you, I had no idea about any of this when I started. But I felt it was the right thing to do, I created a place of enlightenment and learned along with my community.
Okay, I knew what I was going to offer in the store but what should I call it? First I thought “Wind in the Willows” much too common…. Then I was flipping through a fairy book and saw one called “Pillywiggins”. That was cute, but it sounded like a children’s clothing store and there where two other “P” word stores downtown. Then I thought” something with MYSTIC in it! MSTIC SAGE… sage being not only my favorite color (behind purple) and was a wise old man (my father). It was also a staple in the spiritual community.
The dream became a reality on April 1st, 2004 (ha, ha April fools day!) MYSTIC SAGE WAS BORN. After two and a half years in downtown Cadillac, I packed up everything and moved it to Traverse City (a feat I would not recommend to anybody!) As Mystic Sage has tried to make its home in T.C. it has been a struggle but we are here to stay.
Sincerely, Kathy Cline (owner)
